FAQ
Compress PDFs — questions
- 01How much smaller will my PDF get?
- It depends on what's inside. Scanned and photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 70–95%. PDFs that are mostly text are usually small already and may not shrink much — if a level wouldn't make the file smaller, Optimeaux tells you and gives you the original instead.
- 02Which level should I pick?
- Balanced suits most uses, including sharing and on-screen reading. Pick Smallest file for email or upload portals with strict size limits, and High quality when the PDF will be printed.
- 03Does compression remove text or turn pages into images?
- No. Text, fonts, links, and vector graphics are kept and stay selectable and searchable. Only embedded images (photos and scans) are resampled and recompressed.
- 04Are my PDFs uploaded?
- No. Compression runs locally in your browser using Ghostscript compiled to WebAssembly. Your documents never leave your device. Only anonymous aggregate counts (files processed, bytes saved) are recorded — never file contents or names.
- 05Can it compress password-protected PDFs?
- Not currently. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, then compress the unlocked copy.
